Enemy in Combat, part 1, 2017

Lovar, spring, 2017
Verde is 30, Lainey is 30, Esperanza is 5, Carmela is 57

narrated by Verde

Esperanza has been begging for a pet. Every meal she talks about how great it would be to have a pet.

When we play together, she always makes her dolls beg for a pet

and I've noticed that she always has the daddy doll buy the pet for the children. She always says that the daddy doll is the best daddy in the world.

That's how we ended up in the pet store. Lainey wasn't on board with getting a pet, but my mom and Esperanza convinced her. I think she was hoping that Esperanza would pick out a small fish.

I wouldn't mind if she brought home a wombat.

It was looking like she would adopt a bird.

A bird is an unusual choice for a pet, but it would fit our family.

At least, it looked that way until she made her way outside with the puppies.

I'm not sure how it happened, but first she saw the cute little puppies, then there was this huge dog.

It was as large as a bear Lainey and I agreed. I think Esperanza took the fear in our eyes to mean that this bear/dog would be the perfect pet.

That's how we ended up with Bear. He's a cuddly gentle giant and I bet Esperanza could easily harness him and ride him to school if she wanted to.

Shortly afterwards, Lainey said that we needed to talk.

When a man's wife says she needs to talk and makes sure that no one else is around, then you know you're in trouble.

I even asked if I was in trouble. I couldn't think of anything that I had did wrong...well, except the dirty clothes. I always leave my dirty clothes in the middle of the bathroom and she can't stand it.

She said that this wasn't easy for her and that there wasn't an easy way to say it

so she just said it.

"I want divorce."

The words hit me harder than any enemy in combat could. A divorce? A divorce?!?!?

She said that she wasn't happy and she didn't think I was either. She said that she felt that we were going through the motions, playing at being married when we were only roommates with a child.

She said that she had given up on our marriage because she didn't see how anything could make it better.

She said that I am a wonderful father, a good husband, a great friend. But she didn't want to be in our marriage anymore.

Then she started talking about custody arrangements and separations and apartments nearby so Esperanza could walk between our homes.

I wanted to say that I wanted her to be happy. That even if she wasn't with me, I wanted her to be happy.

Then I snapped.

"No."

"What?"

"No."

"What do you mean, no? I want a divorce, you can't tell me no."

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you've been so unhappy and that you've been suffering in silence. I thought everything was ok, I was wrong. Why are you unhappy?"

"I don't love you anymore. I don't respect you anymore."

Her words took my breath away. They left me reeling in pain and anger. I took a breath.

"I don't believe you."

"What?"

"Whatever you're fighting is with you, it's not with me, it's not with our family. It's with you. I don't plan on letting you hurt our family because you're hurting. I will do whatever I need to do to make you see that we love you and that we can make this work."

She stared at me in silence, so I continued.

"If you need a break, fine. Buy the ax throwing set you always wanted. Turn the extra bedroom into your private sauna. Anything to give you the break, or the distance you need without hurting our family."

Her eyes were empty as she looked at me and then she walked into the house. She came back shortly afterwards with a cold malted nectar for me.

"It's a lot to process right now," I said after thanking her. "I will be inside later."

As I watched her walk back into her home, I knew there was no way in hell I was letting her go. I had already lost her once, I'll be damned if I lose her again.

  1. Wow, I think I'm as shocked as Verde! I hope that whatever he is planning to try to convince her to stay works. I feel like it has an equal possibility of backfiring and causing Lainey to resent him even more. :\

    1. I think you're right, when a spouse wants a divorce it's hard to convince them otherwise. Thanks for reading and commenting

  2. I'm shocked too, I know Verde was hung up on S'Ahmisa for a long time but this I never expected. I'm wondering though, is his determination not to lose Lainey again more about love or wounded pride? I hope the two of them can work things out, whatever they end up doing.

    1. That's an interesting question, I think it's more from love. Verde has already out S'Ahmisa in his past and has focused on his family for years now. He doesn't want his family to be hurt, he wants her to be happy but he lost her in the past by simply going along with her desires and not "fighting" for her so he doesn't want to do that again. Thanks for reading and commenting

  3. That definitely came out of nowhere, but it's not exactly surprising. Lainey has never seemed happy in this relationship. At first it came across as jealousy of S'Ahmisa, but since she's been out of the picture for so long it's seems like it's really been about Lainey's own issues all along (whatever they might be.) Maybe Verde can convince her to go to couple's counseling and they can at least try to work it out. Even if she decides not to stay, hopefully she can get to the root of her unhappiness.

    1. You're right, Lainey never seemed happy with the relationship, even when they were dating. It can no longer be pinned on jealousy of S'Ahmisa, she's pretty much cut ties with Verde and Lainey. I hope Lainey can get to the root of her unhappiness as well. Thanks for reading and commenting.

  4. Wow, that came out of left, and I mean far left field! I wonder why she wants a divorce? Verd has been nothing but good to her. And what is this thing of losing respect for he. Seriously! Lainey needs to get slapped with a froze fish. Hmmm, maybe that's what Verd needs to do. (I joke LOL spouse abuse is NOT cool). I hope they are able to work things out. Sounds to me that something is up with Lainey, and maybe she needs to reevaluate her own feels towards herself.

    1. Their marriage wasn't build on the sturdiest of foundations with the whole "why did it take you so long to propose" and them losing their first child. Lainey was trying to hurt Verde when she said that she didn't respect him anymore. Men tend to be very big on respect and women very big on love. So to here "I don't respect you anymore" is the equivalent of saying "I don't love you anymore" and vice versa. Thanks for reading and commenting.

  5. I could feel the sucker punch to Verde when she announced she wanted a divorce. I admire Verde for his determination but I agree, I hope it doesn't cause even more pain in their relationship. For a bit, I was wondering if this was a random event, it was so surprising.

The big dog is so great for Esperanza, especially now it will be good for her to have him.

    1. It wasn't a ROS, we'll hear Lainey's version of things soon and also what Verde has planned to win her back. Thanks for reading and commenting.

  6. Oh man, I did not expect that! What is her reason behind it, why suddenly unhappy? Poor Esperanza. I hope things work out for them, but I just don't know if Verde can force her to stay, or if he can, if he will be happy having a wife that's already checked out. Side note, Bear is totally adorable!! I was oohin and ahhing at the big furbaby until Lainey dropped the bomb, here I thought she was expecting!

    1. Lainey hasn't been the happiest sim for simyears. I think she would have mentioned the divorce earlier, but then they got pregnant so she changed her mind. We will hear from Lainey soon so you can see her version of things. Bear is adorable, I kept passing him in the Create-A-Pet and I knew he would be perfect for them, but he's HUGE! I wanted them to get a bird, lol. Thanks for reading and commenting.

  7. I can't say I'm completely surprised. Lainey has been shown as unhappy in earlier updates. I just wasn't sure if she would try to divorce Verde. And actually, I'm proud of him for fighting for his marriage. For so long he's simply bent to the wills of others. I'm glad he's showing backbone in this.

    1. I think Verde was trying to make people happy so he went along with the flow but now he's not willing to take this lying down and wants to fight for his marriage his family and his love, thanks for reading and commenting
