Kent Decor Scheme: Final Product, Part 3

Decided to do a post detailing step by step my process for decorating my sims homes.

Meet Jesse and Fiona Kent, readers of my story blog are familiar with these two. Their house burned down-aka, I broke it ^_^ and after rebuilding a new house, they now need to decorate it. We're going to start with the living room.
In Part 1, we saw their design scheme using their favorite colors and design preferences. In Part 2, we went "shopping" for dream items and now in Part 3, we'll put the final living room together.

After deciding on items, I tend to put the room together through trial and error of furniture placement then determine what elements I'm missing. In this case I only had to do three small recolors:

the damask curtains,

the rug

and the brown damask pillow

In the end, the final product looked like this.
I used a combination of Maxis items and custom pieces as well as family photos to personalize the space. It's still a bit plain, but that's all that their simoleans would buy...at the moment.

So how do you go about decorating your simmie's places?

  1. Ooo, very lovely! You need to get in my game a design my sims living spaces. You do a really great job! I just started picking colors for my sims, and I will be adding their design schemes sooner or later. Right now I try to decorate their homes based on their charters or how I see them in my mind. Hopefully, with the added color and style it will be easier to decorate, as well as shop for them.

  2. Love the new living room!

Me, I usually just start plonking stuff down, lol. Sometimes it's something I haven't used before and I want to try, so I'll decorate a room around a curtain or cushion. For some reason, I often find it easier to make the big pieces like sofas fit with the accent pieces like rugs, rather than the other way around. So those bits will often go in first.

Other than that though, I don't really have a process!

  3. Riverdale, lol! You sound like SH. I would send her samples of the textures and materials for the rooms for Keith Dalton's designs. The easy part is shopping, the hard part is not gagging over ugly rooms that your simmies love and you hate :P

Carla, it makes sense that an accent piece is your design cue. I do that in RL as well. Accent pieces often have great color combos to work with and make everything connect.

  4. I love your approach to decorating! I've always just been a lazy decorator. I throw things in and hope they look okay together, lol! ;) But with TS3, since they now have favorite colors, I'm starting to pay more attention to those and using them in the decor. There were some Sims before that I always knew what colors they would gravitate to in TS2, but never really assigned favorite colors or decorated much based on them.

  6. This 3 part decorating series was really good.

I try to decorate according to their personalities, like if the Sim is a slob, then I'll do my best cluttering the place up. But I was still bad at it, so then I started collecting inspirational pictures of other people's Sim sites, and when I wanted to decorate, I would look at them.

This helped a little, but not enough. So now I'm planning that the next time I need to decorate, I'll first find the inspirational pictures for this household, and then decorate.

But I always decorate little by little while I play, I wish I could do the whole house and then play, but I find the process so boring I can't do it for long periods. The other reason to decorate little by little is that my Sims are not wealthy, most barely have the extra money to spend on luxury items like curtains.

  7. Ani, I struggle to decorate little by little as well, so my simmies usually get loans, or at least decorate one room in the house before moving on to another room, thanks for reading.
